The OMG story began in 1999, when founder Richard Syme launched UK Web Promotion (later OMG Search) to provide search-engine marketing services – one of just eight UK companies working in search at that time. Within a few months, the company won major clients such as Norwich Union, Swinton Insurance and Its4me, quickly building sales of £100k. At the same time, Richard himself became one of the most knowledgeable and sought-after search consultants in the UK.
Our knowledge of search marketing was fundamental to our next leap forward. Richard saw the opportunity to accelerate growth by creating and optimising sites in-house, then using them to deliver highly targeted, quality traffic that would convert into sales for advertisers on a performance basis. This highly advanced search-marketing strategy proved hugely successful, and the new division established with co-founder Rob Starkey grew rapidly into one of the top performance-based online publishers in the UK. Just two years after foundation, and without outside investment, group sales reached £800k.
Building a thriving publisher business gave us valuable experience of working directly with advertisers and emerging affiliate networks – and revealed another opportunity. Around 2001, most networks offered their publishers an ‘off the shelf’ solution with very little flexibility or support. We saw a gap for a people-based organisation that genuinely valued both advertisers and publishers as partners.
Over the next three years, the newly formed OMG Network used this <people plus technology’ approach to establish itself as one of the top UK networks. After twelve months, group turnover hit £2m. Since then, consistent annual organic growth rates of around 50% have seen total group sales rise to £20m.
Having established ourselves in the UK, since 2007 we have focused on international expansion. We have acquired new clients throughout France, Germany and Spain and struck a joint venture with Adnet in Poland. In the years to come we will continue to expand our customer base by leveraging the power of our technology and our knowledge of performance marketing. |
